By redefining our cultural aesthetic as African people, we can dismiss the negative messages that demean us, from the mass media, our parents, teachers, friends and society as a whole. We do not have to expose ourselves to damaging chemicals to alter our hair. We do not have to destroy our skin and scalp in order to “fit in”. We do not have to continue to believe that one hair type is better than another. All hair types are good. All hair types have equal value and artistic virtue. That is why Black is beautiful, because we have an endless resource of beauty, our distinct selves, our legacy, our textured hair.
